MIME
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension. MIME allows email programs to include
attachments of non-ASCII, nontext data.
mirror
Short for mirror site.
mirror site
A Web site that is an exact copy of another site, set up to ease the traffic
congestion and ease access to the information. Mirror sites are often spread out
geographically.
misc.
Name of the miscellaneous set of newsgroups.
MMX
A technology developed by Intel to enhance the graphics, video, and other
multimedia capabilities of computer microprocessors.
modem
A device that allows your computer to communicate with another computer over a
phone line. It converts the computer's digital signals into the analog signals
necessary for phone-line transmission.
moderated discussion
An online mailing list or newsgroup that is supervised and edited by someone to
prevent off-topic and otherwise inappropriate postings.
MOO
Multiuser Object-Oriented. A kind of multi-user role-playing environment.
Mosaic
The first graphical Web browser, forerunner of Netscape Navigator, developed by
the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of
Illinois Champaign-Urbana.
mouse
The most common form of pointing device for computers with graphical interfaces
is a mouse (trackballs and touchpads are others). By moving the mouse (usually
on a mousepad), the user controls a mouse pointer onscreen and can select text,
open or close programs, navigate Web pages, or move the insertion point to input
data.
MPEG
Motion Picture Experts Group. A standard for compressed video files.
MUD
Multi-User Dungeon or Dimension. A multiuser simulation environment often used
for role-playing games. Users of a MUD can create objects which others can
interact with even after the creator has left the environment. Over time,
virtual worlds are created in this fashion.
