applet
Derived from the diminutive of "application," this small Java program is often
embedded in HTML pages. In contrast to full-fledged Java applications, applets
are denied access to many local computer resources.
application
Another way to say computer program, sometimes truncated informally to "app."
Archie
Software that uses file names or substrings to search for files at anonymous FTP
sites.
article
A message posted to a newsgroup.
ASCII
American Standard Code for Information Interchange. The world standard for 128
codes that computers use to display all the letters, punctuation marks, and
numbers in Western languages. Each code can be represented by a seven-digit
binary number.
attachment
A file which is attached to, and then sent along with, an email message. Any
kind of file can be attached — text, graphics, sound, HTML — but some
attachments are too large to send.
attributes
In HTML, attributes are added to some tags to allow extra formatting options. An
attribute is included after the command word and before the tag's closing angled
bracket. You may use more than one attribute for one tag. See also values.
.avi
This extension means that the file is a video clip stored in the Video for
Windows format. Media Player for Windows 95 is one program that will play these
files. On the Mac, you can view them using Microsoft Internet Explorer or
Apple's QuickTime MoviePlayer version 3.0.
