personality. A nonmedical
term sometimes used to describe dissociative identity disorder (formerly
called multiple personality disorder) or, incorrectly, schizophrenia. stigma. Negative
attitudes about or toward those with mental illness, usually stemming from
fear and misunderstanding, and resulting in disgrace, embarrassment or
humiliation for those with mental illness. St. John's wort. An
herbal preparation from the Hypericum perforatum plant, sometimes
used to treat depression. suicidal ideation.
Thoughts of suicide or a desire to end one's life. suicide. Intentionally
taking one's own life. suppression.
Intentionally avoiding thinking about disturbing problems, wishes,
feelings or experiences. symptom. A subjective
manifestation of a condition that's reported by the individual and not
observable by others, such as sadness. See also sign. synapse. The junction
between two nerve cells (neurons). syncope (SING-kuh-pe).
Fainting. syndrome. A collection
of signs and symptoms that characterize an ailment.
