schizophrenia. A severe, chronic mental
disorder caused by brain dysfunction, resulting in hallucinations,
delusions, distorted thinking and other disturbances.
seasonal affective disorder (SAD). A cyclical type of
depression related to a change in season; usually develops with the onset
of the winter season, when sunlight is limited, and fades with spring.
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
A class of antidepressant medications that increase the level of serotonin
in the brain, a chemical responsible for communication between nerves in
the brain.
self-esteem. Opinion of one's self.
serotonin (ser-oh-TOE-nin). A type of neurotransmitter believed to
influence mood.
sexual abuse. Psychological or physical injury of a sexual
nature, such as rape, incest, fondling and indecent exposure.
side effects. Unwanted changes produced by medication or
other treatment.
sign. An objective manifestation of a condition that's observable,
such as rapid speech or fever, rather than reported by the person with the
condition. See also symptom.
social phobia. A type of anxiety disorder that causes
significant anxiety and discomfort related to a fear of being embarrassed,
judged, humiliated or scorned by others in social or performance
situations.
