eating disorder. Mental disorders
characterized by abnormal and potentially harmful eating behaviors and habits,
such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.
echolalia (ek-o-LA-le-uh). Speech in which one inappropriately and
automatically repeats the last words heard, sometimes occurring in those with
schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome or catatonic disorders.
echopraxia (ek-o-PRAK-se-uh). Movements in which one automatically and
inappropriately imitates or mirrors the movements of another, as can sometimes
be seen in schizophrenia.
efficacy. A measure of how well a medication works to relieve signs and
symptoms of a condition.
elation. Strong feelings of exhilaration, euphoria and optimism.
electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). A therapeutic procedure in which
an electric current is briefly applied to the brain to produce a seizure. This
is used for treatment of severe depressive symptoms or to ease depression that
isn't responding well to other forms of treatment. Sometimes called convulsive
therapy, electroshock therapy or shock therapy.
emetic (uh-MET-ik). A substance that induces vomiting. May be used
inappropriately by those with an eating disorder, or, more commonly, in an
emergency room in some instances when treating a poisoning or drug overdose.
euphoria. A feeling of elation or exceptional well-being.
euthymia (u-THI-me-uh). A normal, positive mood.
