benzodiazepine (ben-zo-di-AZ-uh-pene). A
class of sedative medications sometimes used to treat anxiety disorders.
binge-eating disorder. Regular episodes of uncontrolled
eating (bingeing) of large amounts of food, without the purging present in
bulimia.
biofeedback. A behavior-training program that teaches a person how to
gain some control over autonomic reactions, such as heart rate, blood pressure,
skin temperature and muscular tension.

bipolar disorder. A type of mood disorder that causes alternating
periods of low and high moods — depression and mania. Also called manic

borderline personality disorder. A type of personality
disorder characterized by instability in the perception of self and others,
unstable personal relationships, intense anger, feelings of emptiness and fears
of abandonment.
bulimia nervosa. A type of eating disorder in which one eats large
amounts of food in a single sitting and then out of fear of weight gain, purges
that food by vomiting, laxative abuse, excessive exercise or other means.
