Manic-DepressionManic Depression can be thought of as extreme opposites. From high to low; from euphoria to deep depression. Here, the individual experiences periods of intense depression, which involve many of the symptoms of clinical depression These episodes are followed by periods during which the individual feels powerful, euphoric and exuberant - otherwise know as manic episodes.
There are about 2 million people in North America that suffer from manic depression. As an illness, manic depression usually surfaces during late teens and early adulthood. Manic depression is considered a long term or chronic illness and likewise, treatment/therapy needs to be long term as well. Most treatments focus on being preventative. They attempt to prevent the manic depressive cycle from beginning. Treatment often requires the client to monitor moods, sleep patterns, diet and emotion in the form of a journal. Manic depression is also known as bi-polar disorder.
