One of the great aspects of the bar industry are the bartending tips. In other words, getting paid in cash. I can’t think of to many other occupations outside bartending,  that allow you to make a solid amount of cash, night after night.

After a good bartending shift you can walk out with cash in hand ready for spending. On top of bartending tips, most places pay you a small hourly wage to for your bartending. So really, bartending has two income streams; bartending tips and an hourly wage. I find a helpful way to look at this – and it will help you generate more bartending tips – is to think of bartending as a high commission sales job. The bar or club requests your services and secures your commitment with a small base salary. Using your sales skill you effectively market and sell their product. With each sale bartending, you generate a commission that is paid by the customer. This commission paid in the form of your bartending tips. Looking at bartending this way serves one crucial purpose: to reinforce that the bartender and the bartender alone is responsible for their tips.  
 
Another appeal of cash tips is the ability to spend them right away. How often do find yourself waiting for your pay check to clear before you can make any purchases?  With the tips you make bartending, you can spend your money immediately.

After nearly a decade in the industry is a mixed blessing. A benefit and a problem if you will. Its hard to save money that’s burning a hole in your pocket. It is really easy to spend your bartending tips really quickly.  For some reason once you get into the habit of always have readily available cash in your wallet can really discourage saving.  It does become important then to set up some kind of savings plan.  I found it really helpful to bank a portion of my bartending tips immediately in order to supplement my hourly wage.
